Good Maintenance Practices:

Before purchasing and installing an engine valve lifter, make sure it is the correct size and fit for your vehicle.
Keep the coolant level full and do not allow the engine to overheat - excessive heat could cause the lifter to expand and stick.
Keep engine oil level full.
Be sure that flat non-roller lifters turn in their bores at least 45 degrees in 2 crankshaft revolutions, to help prevent camshaft lobe damage.
If a tapping sound occurs in the engine, have it checked - it could be a sign of a faulty lifter and lead to excessive damage to engine components.
Have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible if the 'Service Engine Soon' light illuminates.
Have your vehicle inspected immediately if the 'Service Engine Soon' light flashes rapidly, as this could indicate an engine misfire condition which may damage your engine and/or engine emission components.
Regularly inspect engine valve lifter for signs of damage or wear, and replace them if signs of damage are found.
